The Eco-Committee focuses on leading environmental education and action in our school, local community and beyond.
Our Eco Committee aims to heighten our awareness of why it is important to look after our environment and how we as a school can collectively make positive and lasting changes to it. We have considered how to do this by planning our own environmental and sustainable projects.
The members of our Eco-Committee are elected each year by their class. They all have a passion to see the school become a greener and more eco-aware environment. The children are the driving force behind the committee and the ones who lead assemblies, meetings, ideas and actions points.
Once elected, the child is then the voice for their peers, passing on information from Eco-Committee meetings that require a classroom debate. The results from these debates are then put forward to the Senior Leadership Team to provide the children’s perspective on certain aspects of school life.
From these monthly meetings we have found that members of our Eco-Committee learn to understand the importance of respect towards other people’s ideas, effective communication and understanding that their voice is important for change. While from a class point of view, we have found that children enjoy taking part in classroom debates and begin to appreciate the similarities and differences in the opinions of others.
One of the most important jobs for the Eco-Committee is to consult with their classes about the priorities for our Eco Plan and update them on whole school projects and the progress made.
Last year we reached out to our local community by actively picking litter off the streets. The feedback from the community was very positive, and this is something we are going to continue this year. We will also be engaging in other innovative projects to recycle, reduce our carbon footprint and create more healthy life choices. These projects generate real life opportunities for our children to develop a personal sense of responsibility, resilience, resourcefulness, respect for others and the capability to reflect positively on their own learning opportunities and achievements which they can take with them into the local and wider community..

New General Waste and Mixed Recycling bins have been introduced to all classes, shared areas, learning spaces and community areas. We are now more mindful of how we throw away our waste and what can/cannot be recycled.
